Try Your Wings in Rehoboth
It was a hot Saturday evening last week
when I decided on a whim to get a virtual buffet of items from Wings to Go
on North First Street in downtown Rehoboth. I’d spent most of the
afternoon shopping, and then met my friend Julia for happy hour. You know
how that goes…happy hour is best served with wings.
Many downtown restaurants are known for
their wings, and we all have our favorites. If you haven’t tried Wings
to Go, though, you are not allowed to make your decision yet. Their wings
rival the best in town. The first time I tried their wings, I looked with
wide eyes at my friend and colleague with whom I was eating. We both had
wings in our mouths, and at the same time, we said, “Oh my gosh, these
are sooo good.”
If you read this column on a regular basis,
you probably know that to me, it’s all in the sauce. At no place is that
more true than at Wings to Go. The wings were delicious and meaty, but
it’s the sauce that makes them extraordinary. With about 20 different
sauces to choose from, there is something for everyone. The mild and
medium sauces are both very mild. I recommend the hot (which is their best
selling sauce) or the Bar-B-Cide (a spicy bar-b-cue flavor). There are
also some interesting ones like Curry and Caribbean Jerk.
By the way, Wings To Go has catering
services, so if you want to put out a wing buffet and try all these
wonderful flavors at your next party, just let them know (and don’t
forget to invite me).
In addition to the requisite wings, last
Saturday, I decided to try some of the other items from the new menu. For
the kids, they’ve added corn dogs, hot dogs and chicken tenders. The
most unexpected new items were the ribs. They were surprisingly good: very
lean and served with your sauce of choice. I had the Honey BBQ sauce on my
ribs, and it was very good.
The sandwiches and wraps were both also
very good. I tried the regular tender strip sandwich and the chicken
Caesar wrap. In the sandwiches and wraps, you have your choice of either
grilled or fried chicken, and I tried one of each. I liked them both. The
grilled chicken was moist and flavorful. The fried chicken wrap included
smaller pieces that were very lightly battered. The taste of the batter
did not overpower the taste of the chicken. The Caesar wrap was especially
good, with a yummy mix of the hot chicken, cold tomatoes, lettuce and
Caesar dressing. Also, it was huge. The 12 inch tortilla was stuffed full.
The highlight of my Saturday mini-buffet
was something I never would have tried without the urging of co-owner John
Riley-Spillane. He and his partner, Keith Riley-Spillane, purchased Wings
to Go last year and have worked hard to expand the menu and provide
excellent service. See page 4 for information about their anniversary
party this weekend.
When I describe this final menu item, I
want you, dear reader, to keep your mind open. It may sound odd, but it is
extremely delicious. Mac and Cheese Wedges are little pieces of glorious
flavor. They are bite sized bits of Mac and Cheese that have been fried to
a light brown. They are not greasy like you might think, but are instead
just plain scrumptious. They will be at the top of my gotta-have-it list
next time I pop into Wings to Go on a whim, before, during, after or
instead of happy hour. These wedges will make you happy, too.
So pop in on a whim of your own to Wings to
Go.
