Dog Days
Though I’ve heard the expression “Dog Days” since I was a child, I never really knew what it meant. I looked it up. The Old Farmer’s Almanac explains that “the phrase ‘Dog Days’ conjures up the hottest, most sultry days of summer,” coinciding with the heliacal rising of Sirius, the dog star, in the constellation Canis Major. It was thought that this was a time when “…the sea boiled, the wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies.” The generally accepted duration of Dog Days is mid-July through early September—so we’re still in the thick of it! Fight the urge to become languid, or have burning fevers and hysterics by stepping inside a local gallery or enjoying an evening of theatre. So much more civilized.
